Ancient Greece

I thought I knew everything there was to know about the ancient Greeks, but I have discovered that I still have a lot to learn!

Share some amazing facts that you know about the ancient Greeks.

Also, can you name the significance of the pictures above?

  1. The first picture is probably a picture of an old statue of a god or goddess of some sort who looks like the Statue of Athena who is the goddess of wisdom and war, the second is a type of pot and the picture on it looks as if there are two men doing something and the last is another pot and I think the picture is showing the Olympics.

    Facts:

Some gods and goddess' include: Zeus god of sky, clouds and rain, Hera goddess of marriage and married women, Poseidon god of seas, Aphrodite goddess of love and beauty, Athena goddess of wisdom and arts, Phoebus Apollo god of sun, healing, music and poetry.

P.S. - I have three book that might help and they are Magic Tree House books but they come in handy: Ancient Greece and the Olympics, Ancient Rome and Pompeii (whatever that is) and Mummies and Pyramids (I don't know if that one will help).

    See you later!

I am also known as HarryPotterFan!

  3. I also thought I knew all about Greece, but that little video you showed us proved me wrong!

I read online that the Greeks were most pwerful between the years 200 BC and 146 BC. Also, the first Olympic games were held in 776 BC, in (you guessed it) Olympia. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm guessing thats how the games name came to be!

I can't name the first two, but I'm guessing that the black one represents the 400m (I think) dash, which the video said was the most popular event.

  4. Right on for your guess about the first picture being a sculpture of the goddess Athena. Also correct is the guess of the third picture depicting the Olympic Games. Can anyone provide more information of the second picture?

  7. The first picture depicts a sculpture of Athena. I thought you might recognize her from the video that we watched in class. What do you know about Athena that you can share with the rest of us?

Also, some of the students learned that the winners in the early Olympic games were often given painted pots and vases as their prize. I wonder if the vase in the picture is this type? Also, I need to know more about the ancient Olympic events in order to figure out what is painted on the vase. Can anyone help with this?
